Our Christian value for this half term is 'friendship'. We spoke about what friendship means to us and how the value is expressed in the parable of David and Jonathon. We then outlined our peers and shared positive comments about everyone in Sycamore (in their outlines).
Mark Adler, from Mendip Times, kindly came in and talked to us about journalism and photography. This linked to our English unit of newspaper writing - it was great to hear from a real life journalist! He showed us some of his work, shared lots of interesting stories and even let us have a go at using his professional cameras!
We designed Christmas decorations and practised different sewing techniques (blanket and running stitch). We had fun making these decorations with our family!
We have been learning about how land is used and how land changes over time. To find out even more, we visited Somerset Rural Life Museum. We learnt about how land in Somerset has changed, what jobs used the land (farming, shopkeepers, cheesemakers etc) and weaved willow stems, just like weavers used to do. We went on a scavenger hunt around the museum and even milked a cow. We had lots of fun and our trip wouldn't have been possible without our kind parent helpers.
We have been continuing to explore Earth and Space and different ideas about the universe (including theories from Copernicus, Galileo, Newton and Aristotle).
We created our solar system out of fruit and used metre sticks for accuracy. Some of our solar systems stretched from the playground to the field!
We have been learning about E-safety and refining internet searches (to find the exact information that we need).
In Science, we learnt about the phases of the moon and made each phase out of Jaffa Cakes.
We have been learning about sci-fi stories and have written our own about an alien landing on the playground! We created pop-up books that used different mechanisms (pivot, slider, pop-up, spring, lever) to bring our alien stories to life. We sketched, used glitter, sequins and water colour paints to make our stories even more exciting!
We have been learning about ancient civilisations, and will focus on Benin Kingdom. We have ordered key events through history.
We have been learning about factors; multiples; prime, composite, square and cube numbers; multiplying and dividing numbers by 10,100 and 1000. We have made square and cube numbers out of Multilink.
To celebrate Advent we made a class Advent Calendar. We also celebrated Christingle and joined in with a KS2 Carols at Candlelight performance, in which we performed an adapted poem about the Shepherds in the Christmas story.
We had a Christmas party, where we played games and had a feast.
We drew number lines on the playground. We labelled each interval in improper fractions and their mixed numbers. We then jumped to convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers.
We have been learning about ancient civilisations, with a focus on Benin Kingdom. In Forest School, we created a famous structure from an ancient civilisation, that other groups tried to guess. Can you guess what structures we made?
In PSHE, we designed and played our own games. We thought carefully about how to include everyone, to all be active at the same time, to make our games fair and fun and to also have rest breaks. Our PE topic was dance.
