Maths Overview

Mathematics statement of Intent

At the East Somerset Federation, the teaching of mathematics aims to ensure that children are fluent in the fundamentals of the subject; are able to reason, both verbally and in writing; and are also able to solve problems in a range of contexts across the curriculum and in everyday life.

Aims

At the East Somerset Federation, we aim for every child to:

  • Recognise the importance of maths in everyday life
  • Develop a curiosity and a sense of enjoyment about the subject
  • Develop the ability to think mathematically through reasoning and problem solving in a range of contexts
  • Have a secure knowledge of age appropriate mental maths skills
  • Have a sound grasp of the fundamentals which underpin this subject

We follow the objectives as outlined in the national curriculum but use the White Rose Schemes of Learning to support our implementation of these objectives. We place considerable value on children having a secure understanding of the fundamentals of the subject and therefore use the Number Sense factual fluency programme to support this in KS1.

Our lessons:

Following a mastery approach as endorsed by the DfE and the NCETM, our lessons use a range of practical resources and visual representations to support children's understanding of mathematical concepts. Children are routinely given opportunities to practise and consolidate on previously learned concepts as this is vital to move this knowledge into their long term memory.

We have 5 maths lessons per week in all classes, with each lesson 60 minutes long. In addition to this, children will regularly access 10 Tough Ten Maths arithmetic questions upon arriving to school. KS1 pupils will receive a 10 minute daily Number Sense session. In years 3 and 4 children will continue to develop their factual fluency with our schools times tables approach. Furthermore, children regularly practise their times tables at home using TT Rockstars and we have several whole school competitions annually.
