Upton Noble Primary School

Sycamore (Yr 5)

Mrs Saxton, Mr Lewis and I are looking forward to this year in Sycamore, and to getting to know your children.

Here is some information that you might find useful this year.

The children should stay outside until 8.50am when the classroom door opens. They can then come in and put their things away in the cloakroom before returning to the playground until school starts at 9am.

The children need to make sure they have their reading books and home school records in school every day. They can also bring their pencil cases in, and it is each child’s responsibility to look after their own things. It is helpful if the children have a water bottle in school.

We have PE twice a week - the days may change so please make sure your child has full PE kit in school every day. When the swimming pool is open we will swim as often as we can, so your child will need to have their swimming kit in school every day. In the winter months, children should have waterproof clothes in school so that we can use the outdoor areas whatever the weather. Please make sure that everything your children bring into school is named, including uniform, PE and swimming kit and water bottles. Lost property that is not named will be left in the lost property box at the office.

Each week the children will have a list of spellings to practise at home. We will test spellings on Fridays, and every morning we have a spelling session first thing. Your children will also have a maths activity each week to complete at home. This will be sent home on Thursday, and should be returned by Tuesday please. Children need to continue to read at home regularly this year, at least three times a week, and this needs to be recorded in their home school record. Our guided reading sessions in school will focus on reading comprehension and developing the children’s understanding of the texts they are reading. You can support your child at home by asking questions about what they are reading.

In year 5 we will continue to encourage independence so the children can work confidently and be responsible for themselves and their learning, and we have high expectations of each child.
If you need to speak to me about anything you can do this in person (preferably after school), by writing a message in your child’s home school record, or on the phone.
